Creating small scale versions using 3D printed furnishing such as tables, clothing stands, and object stands allowed for a prototype to show how the space would be constructed and attendees would view the pieces in the gallery. Many of the objects in the space were large woven blankets and printed sheets of fabric which would drape organically, leaving parts of itself to be on the floor of the gallery. By making the small scale model, visibility was shown into how much floor space was available for crowds of people.
I tend to collect many objects including printed materials, physical natural objects such as rocks, plants, raw materials, and fabrics which can be up-cycled into a larger garment. With one of the woven blankets (60in x 80in) I collected parking receipts throughout LA during 2020. Using different compositions of them and scaling them into an arraignment, I placed the collection of receipts onto the blanket to be shown at a larger scale.
Lately I have been exploring drawing patterns onto leather and machine-embroidering them using thread. This process involves using different widths of the thread to create tapering and thickness throughout the pattern. Embroidery machines are typically not large enough to create full design patterns and with leather, there needs to be a process of variable speed and awareness while creating the pattern, as needles can bend and break if the tension is too stressed.
I have created bags using fabric and insulated filling, with various hardware to create straps and enclosures. By using 3D printing, it allows for scaling of objects and creating multiple pieces of a bag, that can be combined together using hardware or sewn fabrics. Smaller details on molds and printing typically need to be sanded or hand restored to prepare it for paint and finishings.
